Starry Starry Night Starry Starry Night

An introduction to star gazing and star lore

presented by international science educator Chris Hilder

Come on a tour of the night sky and be introduced to its mystery and beauty. Learn how to use a star wheel map of the sky (also known as a planisphere) to identify stars. Hear star stories from Aotearoa, Japan and Greece told with shadow puppets, animation, and music. Find out how the stars were used on the journey from Rarotonga to Aotearoa, and for planting and harvesting of the kumara. Featuring a computer simulated night sky and a tabletop planetarium (shown in picture at right).

This event ran as part of the 2000 International Science Festival, 2000 Dunedin Fringe Festival, and 2002 International Science Festival where it played to rapt audiences.

This programme runs for two hours, and is suitable for children (from age 10 and up) and adults. It requires a venue where large screen projection is possible with full blackout and a screen at least 3m x 4m. The Drama Theatre at Dunedin College of Education is admirably suited, and is available by arrangement.

Performances by arrangement. Please contact Chris Hilder.
